Optimise 3D Models

All 3D Models contributed to TIH should adhere to the guidelines and specifications listed on this page.

Technical Specifications

File Standards

  • FBX 2014/2015 (Binary)
File Naming Convention
  • <40 characters
  • Consists of only alphanumeric characters
  • Animation clip names must not have spacing (E.g. “WalkLeft” should be used instead of “Walk Left”)

Quality Standards

Texture File size per asset
  • < 20mb
Polygon Count per asset
  • < 100k polys
Exported FBX File size per asset

File Uploads

All 3D model uploads should consist of the following media files:

Description

File Format
Thumbnail Image
  • 1050x750px Image render of asset, with grey (#595959) background
  • .jpg
3D Model
  • FBX file export
  • .fbx
Texture Maps
  • All associated PBR maps
  • .jpg
  • .png (if contains alpha channel)

When I upload my .fbx or .max file, I get the error message "File Format Not Supported".

Problem: Your .fbx or .max file is not compatible with TIH 3D Model upload guidelines.

Solution: Please review the 3D Models best practices guide to ensure that your .fbx or .max file matches TIH 3D Model upload guidelines.

When I upload my .fbx or .max file, I get the error message "File Size Exceeds 20MB".

Problem: Your .fbx or .max file exceeds TIH maximum file size of 20MB.

Solution:

  • Remove non-essential elements from your .fbx or .max file, e.g. "helper" reference (added by certain software when exporting the 3D Model file).
  • Reduce the polygon count:
    • Before exporting the 3D Model, perform retopology and re-mesh with a lower polygon count; or
    • Use Polygon Cruncher or other 3D optimisation software to simplify and auto-reduce polygon count.
  • Note that your polygon count must not exceed TIH guidelines as stated in the 3D Models best practices guide.
  • Watch tutorial video on reducing 3D Model file size:

When I upload my .png files (e.g. textures), I get the error message "File Size Exceeds 20MB".

Problem: Your .png file exceeds TIH maximum file size of 20MB.

Solution:

  •  Use .jpg or .jpeg file format instead of .png file format.
  • Note that .png file format is only needed for alpha channels, e.g. transparent albedo map. To continue uploading a .png file which exceeds 20MB, perform reasonable file compression.Remove non-essential elements from your .fbx or .max file, e.g. "helper" reference (added by certain software when exporting the 3D Model file).

My 3D Model is missing a thumbnail image.

Problem: Your 3D Model does not contain any image files.

Solution: Go to Edit Media and upload an image file to your 3D Model. Note that the first image file uploaded is automatically the thumbnail.

My 3D Model is showing the wrong thumbnail image.

Problem: During 3D Model upload, the first image uploaded was not the thumbnail image.

Solution:

  • Go to Edit Media and select your 3D Model.
  • Delete all image files except for your intended thumbnail image.
  • Re-upload the rest of the images into your 3D Model and publish changes.
